MTV names New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War the 9th best album of 2008. From the website: Time isn't really important in Badu's New Amerykah, which is why she jumps from the smoke-filled streets of the 1970s to the darkened and desperate projects of the present day to the post (pre?) apocalyptic future without much concern for the narrative arc. What is important is the message she conveys

throughout those travels: that no matter how hard we try, things keep falling apart. They have been and they are and they will continue to do so, unless we wake up, stand up and — most of all — fight. So she puts the gun to our backs, orders us to march headlong into the darkness. She might not tell us where we're going — or what we'll see when we get there — but no one ever said revolutions were easy. This is a story told through stony beats, crackling samples and smoky voices, and rather terrifyingly so. Welcome to post-millennial tension.
USAToday.com named New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War top 5 albums of 2008. "Gutsy, inventive, deeply felt neo-soul and retro funk" we can read on it.

Associated Press' top 10 albums list does contain some of the usual suspects — Kanye, Taylor, Lil Wayne. But it also features artists who have yet to realize their platinum peak, and others who are firmly entrenched in alternative scene. They all have one thing in common — they created the best CDs of year. Here's a rundown of music's elite. Number 1 is Erykah Badu with "New Amerykah, Part One (4th World War)": It's been five years since Badu made any musical statement of merit.

The "Worldwide Underground" EP was her last project and it barely met the gold standard she set with her first two amazing albums. But Badu, one of R&B's most creative voices, returned to form with "New Amerykah," which played like an eclectic, absorbing jam session. We are already desperately awaiting part two. Read more.
